Sortera Invests in Major Upgrade at Edmonton Site

Sortera has completed the first phase of a multi-million-pound improvement project at its Edmonton site, part of an ongoing programme to enhance processing capacity, operational efficiency, and sustainability performance across its network.

The project, known internally as Project Mercury, represents the largest infrastructure upgrade undertaken by the business to date and marks a major milestone in Sortera’s continued growth. The first of two new processing lines has now been installed and entered commissioning, significantly increasing the site’s capacity and improving precision, speed, and material recovery. A second system is set to follow in the coming months, further expanding on that.

The investment will deliver substantial gains in throughput and flexibility, supporting the company’s commitment to maximising recycling and resource recovery while minimising environmental impact. Alongside the new systems, the site also benefits from enhanced safety features, including advanced monitoring and fire prevention technology, ensuring resilience and efficiency remain at the core of operations.

The project is being delivered in partnership with Northern Ireland based engineering specialists CRS, who have been instrumental in helping deliver the new system design and technical build.
